What is SEO? SEO or what is commonly referred to as Search engine optimization is where a web page or website's web search ranking can be manipulated.

The higher the web search ranking, the greater number of visitors to the website.

The web search ranking is very important because it will increase website traffic for free.

You'll often hear the web search ranking of a website referred to as SERP (search engine results page).

Your goal is to be in the top ten search ranking results.

When using SEO in your website content, your long tail keyword phrases or search terms should be analyzed and then incorporated into the website content to increase the website search engine ranking.

  • Keywords should only be incorporated into your content if they are relevant to the page.

How does SEO work?

Search engine "spiders" (often referred to as web crawlers) index websites.

The indexing process uses your website content collected by the search engine spider and analyzes it. The data is then stored in a search engine database and is presented to an end user searching for information (based on keywords or phrases collected from your website content during the indexing process). Consider your long tail keyword phrases search engine spider bait.

That seems easy enough doesn't it? Actually, there's more to SEO than just incorporating relevant keywords into your website content. In addition to using SEO content writing, you also need to get quality inbound links.

Inbound links and SEO go hand in hand. The role of inbound links in SEO is basically is a reference or recommendation for your site from another site. It's someone else making a recommendation that your site provides credible information in regards to your content topic. The quality of your inbound links will determine your web search ranking.

  • Think of inbound links in relation to applying for a job. Your references provide the employer confirmation that you are truly a dedicated worker. 
  • This is the same way an inbound link works on your website. It's like a reference or referral.
  • An inbound link is a link from another website to yours. For an example, this is an inbound link to Google (I have created a link to Google from here).

Inbound Link as Referral Traffic

  • An inbound link from another site is a means of providing traffic to your site otherwise known as referral traffic.
  • If your link is on a site that receives a significant amount of traffic, your traffic could also be increased due to your link being on the site.
  • You could have an awesome website but you're not getting traffic due to your lack of inbound links from other sites.
  • It's a known fact that the more high quality back links you have, the higher you'll rank in the search engine results.
  • Inbound links are not reciprocal links.
  • Reciprocal links are when you have exchanged links (your link on my website, my link on yours).
  • While the reciprocal links are important, they are not nearly as critical as inbound links when it comes to a search engine determining the web search ranking for your page or site.

Types of Links

You have either graphic or text links.

Text link

  • A Text Link appears to get better results when it comes to search engine ranking. 
  • If your text link contains one of your site keywords, it serves as an anchor link and you can consider it of even more value.
  • You don't want to link directly with your competition but you do want inbound links from sites that are somewhat similar to yours.
  • An anchor link is the text that is displayed on your website when linking to another page or location. The search engine uses the anchor text to determine the subject of the target page or location.
  • Let's look at an example of a link that serves as anchor text. 
  • Do a Google search on "click here" and guess what your results are? 
  • Adobe of course because so many websites have linked to Adobe with "click here" as the anchor text. That's how important your anchor text is.
  • Be choosy for your anchor text. It should always include the keyword or long tail keyword phrase it is linking to is optimized for. If you have already linked the same phrase on several pages, choose a synonym or a secondary keyword for internal linking.

In summary, search engine optimization will increase your web search rankings and increase website traffic free. If you'll incorporate long tail keyword phrases (no keyword stuffing) along with quality inbound links, you'll see your traffic conversion rate increase.
